OVAL began in the early 90’s and rapidly gained acclaim for its innovations in electronic music. Composer Markus Popp championed software intuition over his own role in music making for many years, anticipating the AI trend in composition by nearly 30 years. Early albums found a critique of the entire system of recorded music built into every gesture. Popp toured with a desktop computer and projected his screen, constructing remarkably evocative and emotional performances from file manipulation. Each new Oval release saw Popp radically redefine his practice, introducing new elements and embracing new creative challenges, integrating cutting-edge technology and processes into his practice to ensure that each record sounded as contemporary and exhilarating as the last. Popp approached pieces more as an art director or composer than a producer. Meticulous attention to detail and a wide-eyed sense of discovery has enabled Popp to continually innovate with each release.
Latest album „Scis“ and its companion EP „Eksploio“ (both released by Thrill Jockey) see the producer focus on composition, working with a fresh palette of sounds to create his most emotive work to date. Popp injects a newfound playfulness into his complex loop architectures, with both album and EP exploring and subverting elements of club music. The intricate, organic drum sounds Popp introduced on the „Oh!“ EP and „O“ album have here been replaced with driving electronic rhythms, albeit still approached by Popp as an instrumentalist rather than a beat-maker.
Where early compositions saw Popp meticulously tinkering with software and systems to reduce his own visible hand in the music, „Scis“ instead sees Popp focus the human element in his creation, augmenting delicate and intensely crafted loops with an array of acoustic instruments. Sounds sourced from prepared pianos, woodwinds and strings were manipulated and sculpted with simulated sounds into intricate and substantial sonic layers. Popp would then record a live playthrough of the pre-constructed loops while adding in instruments from his vast collection of sound samples to shape each song. The resulting pieces have a distinctive freeform, improvised feel to them, never hiding behind “electronic abstraction” but rather engaging in a musical dialog with the listener.
“It’s a great example of Popp’s talent for making ambitious experiments sound both playful and coy.” – PITCHFORK / 7
“Eksploio and Scis are surface-level belters that reveal further angles and avenues with each listen” – THE WIRE
“Oval’s Markus Popp is one of the few electronic artists to provide a strong challenge to Aphex Twin and Autechre’s well-guarded thrones” – TREBLEZINE
Since 2011, Berlin-based musician Nathaniel Fowler has used the NOVO LINE project to take deep dives into the esoteric world of MIDI archeaology; uncovering unused and unknown features in obsolete music production hardware from the wave of Adult Oriented Rock of the late 80s and repurposing its textures and cliches for obtuse listening experiences, continuing his interest in polyrhythms and breathable compositional flow first known to the world via his band Oxes (1998-2011.) Allowing aleatoric methods to guide creative flow; melody, rhythm and harmony generate across multiple Atari ST computers, and with custom tunings, active listening and live mixing allow his tracks to appear out of the MIDI ether, based on choices made in the moment, whether live for the dancefloor or the pensive performance space or in the studio for releases on Osare Editions, Ecstatic Recordings, Diagonal, Mais Para Baixo, Das Andere Selbst, and others.

ARTISTS
Shkoon live
Ameli Paul live
Forma live
SHKOON
The German Syrian band Shkoon released their long-awaited debut album “Rima” in December 2019, followed by a huge album tour. Their music is a message for cultural diversity. But the band is more than a German Syrian live act with arabic lyrics. In addition to their own lyrics, the band is using old traditional music elements of the Arab community, such as Syrian folklore, which today is more relevant than ever. In their sets, oriental melodies partner up with occidental electronic.
FORMA
Ever expanding its boundaries, Forma subverts the listeners' expectations. Juan’s electronic background fuses with the experimental spirit of Pablo’s musical search to create an eclectic trip exhausting one mood at a time. Forma makes their intentions known from the off, as they take the listener on an emotive and harmonic smoke-screened journey accented by warped synthesisers, haunting vocals and a playful mixture of subdued four-four beats and elastic rhythmic triplets.
AMELI PAUL
When Ameli and Paul’s paths cross in 2016, they immediately feel the urge to fuse their approaches of making music – the succinct productions of Paul, Ameli’s inherent songlike musicality and sentimental voice. Constantly evolving their live performance over the last years, the duo stands for a stirring electronic sound that ranges from cineastic excursions to pop-like song structures. On their musical playground synthesizers, field recordings, vocals and guitars join forces to create thrilling dance tunes to dive into and get lost in.

Kovacs is a multi-talented diamond in the rough. Starting her career in music predominantly, she’s extended her talents into art, fashion and culture.
A shaven-headed chanteuse hiding the voice of a soul legend beneath her fluffy bear hood, Sharon Kovacs is an enigmatic phenomenon. Emerging from the music college and improvised open mike nights of Eindhoven in the Netherlands, she has forged her own unique path through life’s devious twists and tangles, and entranced the globe with her wicked allure. The Bond-like tango noir of her 2013 EP ‘My Love’, partly recorded in Cuba, was an instant European hit, even reaching Number One in Greece, and in 2015 her debut album ‘Shades Of Black’ charted in 36 countries, making the Top Ten in Germany and hitting Number One in her Dutch homeland.
Sixty million YouTube views, a modelling contract with Viva Paris, a clutch of awards and high-profile sets at major festivals and a Robbie Williams support slot later, Kovacs’ dark, raw, bare-hearted soul with distinct touches of the greats (Holliday, Simone, Bassey, Winehouse, Portishead’s Beth Gibbons) is on the verge of making her a sultry superstar. Her second album ‘Cheap Smell’ is one of the most open, honest and inspired future soul albums of the decade, named after her last pre-fame band and – like her debut – out to find the positive in life’s toughest turns.
Using music as a canvas to tell stories of darkness and light - it becomes a gripping tale of which you have no choice but to listen to.
